Transitioning from Public to Private…

It has been quite the experience founding an Art Gallery on Vancouver Island. My Mission to stimulate arts in my hometown and as I call it “advancement of people through art and design” has been met with love, critique and a major sense of competitiveness from a few. Truly I have only just begun, the data I have compiled over the past two years of investing in my community is already paying off, the research is now being utilized to restructure Lantzville Art Gallery.

I started by providing a Public Gallery and now due to my own personal life (just had a baby, now mama of 3,) research and my personal desire to make best use of my investment while Supporting Living Artists; I am transitioning LAG into a Private, By Appointment Only Gallery.

Check out the LAG website and make sure to follow and if you are an Artist, ask yourself; who is supporting your career in the Arts?

Mama and Me

Now that I am a mom of 3 it’s not that time flies, it actually EVAPORATES!

Finding balance as a Mother is not easy, the challenges set forth by adding that “bundle of joy” to our lives as amazing as it is….can knock us off our feet. The lack of sleep, lack of time alone, juggling the household chores, coordinating the activities, school and play dates… never-mind trying to maintain a career or simply pre-motherhood relationships, the never ending demands upon us seem only to increase and that is why, excuse me these too are the reasons why I swear by yoga. Not only does it keep me balanced emotionally but the healing process and pure act of countering all the damage a busy life can create.

Those of you who have been following my journey for a while, already know I have been dedicated to Yoga 6 days a week since Feb. 2014. Making this my fourth year practicing daily to maintain sanity, get & stay balanced, tone physically and over all “Feel Better!” It’s working beautifully! My baby is now 3.5months old and I can tell you, what a difference doing yoga during pregnancy made and then post delivery as soon as the required 8 weeks of initial postpartum healing was complete, on the mat again I was. It’s awesome to hear others notice, “Danica, you look great, didn’t you just have a baby!?!” Yes, yes I did….but it’s not only about the physical results, actually it’s not about the noticeable results at all… it’s all about the process.

Self-Help is just that, you helping yourself and absolutely required in all transitions and transformations but everyone needs a little coaching. Support and education along the way. My Guru is Kavita Maharaj of Reddoor Yoga and even though I too teach, I must constantly learn. This past January 14th I received my certification in Postnatal & Mama and Me Yoga, it’s part of the 500 hour certification course but I choose to take it early to start now specializing on an area that I am very familiar with; Motherhood. I think the hell I went through being laid off for taking Maternity leave while working for the Astani Brothers at Astani Enterprises and HPG Management in Beverly Hills during my first pregnancy and Birth of daughter Alicia was specifically to bring me to this very point.

Becoming a Yoga Fitness Leader

It has been a real journey of self discovery, endurance and will…developing and growing in my personal knowledge and practice of Yoga and Ayurveda. I first started attending Bikram Yoga while I lived in Los Angeles, California. I had seen an ad for unlimited classes for two weeks for a very low rate at a Yoga Studio in Atwater Village. At the time I lived in Los Feliz and it was not far at all. I have since learned that I started with the most intense and strenuous form; Bikram. Known to many now as “Hot Yoga” given some not-so-decent actions on the part of the founder of Bikram…But I won’t go into that, every ¬†industry is plagued by a practitioner who is less than ethical, moral and or who lacks integrity and grace.

I attended a few classes and continued to do so during the many years in LA but never a daily practice and certainly not a full understanding of the depth of Yoga. I was in fact dependent on the class instructor calling out the poses and trying my best to achieve them. It wasn’t until Feb. 2014 when I found myself desperately searching for the “True Self Help method.” You see I had fallen completely out of shape, felt depressed and devastated by betrayal I had recently experienced. My entire world had been turned upside down ¬†and I noticed I just wasn’t myself any longer. Determined to find a solution I sought out to analyze the road that got me to this low point. Long story short I walked through the doors of Red Door Yoga Studio in my Hometown; having booked a private session for Ayurveda with Guru, Kavita Maharaj. That day in front of her, I cried as I could barely perform a very basic yoga pose. It was after a few sessions I started to understand how the class environment had robbed me of the deeper meaning and healing benefits of yoga, granted I could have delved further at an earlier point in my life but clearly I had needed to fall as low as I had to find what I needed most… BALANCE and ROOTING.

It has now been over three years since that first session and I have been dedicated to my own personal morning daily practice with one day off per week for rest. The routine includes applying warm oil to my entire body, performing close to an hour yoga, neti cleansing, eye cleansing and a tongue scrape. This daily routine and these tools of self care have been teaching me self love and in my opinion; yoga is the only true form of self-help that exists. I say this because once learned, you are not dependent; not on a supplement and certainly not on a teacher or expert, both requiring constant payment to keep up. Yoga can be practiced without the need for costly investment and can be maintained privately whether you are wealthy or not-so.

So here we are present day and I have now completed my YFL Yoga Fitness Leader Part one. Soon to complete parts 2 and 3…working at the present moment on designing my personal yoga class and sequence so that I may help others to help themselves. I have found in my life of experienced abuse, obstacles and betrayal a need for servitude…that others may receive benefit of the knowledge gained and trials had…It is exciting to embark on the journey as a teacher of yoga and continue on the journey of learning Ayurveda all to the benefit of myself and others.

As your personal Coach, I am devoted to the mission of leading and teaching through testimony. May your journey be smoother than mine and may you be encouraged to start on your path to self love and self healing. Namaste
